Geospatial Data Act Setting the Stage for Geospatial Coordination

The Geospatial Data Act (GDA) of 2017, ceremoniously re-introduced in both the Senate and House on GIS Day, is legislation worthy of the support of the entire geospatial community.   Since the concept of a national geospatial data infrastructure was introduced in 1993, there have been several attempts to improve geospatial coordination and codify many well-established processes.

Unfortunately, previous initiatives often fell short of the intended objectives, appearing to benefit one geospatial sector over another. The proposed legislation does a better job of managing geospatial assets while aligning the interests of the federal government with the need for partnerships with state, local and tribal governments.  As a provider of geospatial and consulting solutions for both governmental and private sector clients across a variety of markets, Atlantic is publicly supporting the Geospatial Data Act of 2017 and is hopeful that the collaborative approach to geospatial coordination will maximize data sharing and benefit all users and clients within the geospatial industry.

Mr. Cy Smith, the State of Oregon Geospatial Information Officer, shared his stance on the GDA with Atlantic’s team:

“This important legislation will give Congressional oversight of federal geospatial […]

Nebraska GIS/LIS Association Conference

Are you attending the Nebraska GIS/LIS Association Conference? Not only do we hope to see you there, our very own Tim Blak and Chris Chalmers will be presenting.
Tim will explain applications for the billions of lidar points collected! Want to learn more about LiDAR applications and what can you do with the data? A partnership of entities has strategically been collection lidar throughout the state of Nebraska. Billions of lidar points have been collected thus far yet that is all they are, just billions of three-dimensional points typically classified as ground and non-ground. In essence, they are one of the building blocks for creating data models to aid in analysis and the decision-making processes within a GIS environment. This presentation will look at how to use lidar data for hydrologic modeling including hydro-enforcement. It will also highlight additional applications for the forestry sector.
And Chris will discuss “Yes, We Can Provide High-Quality LiDAR for Less than $100 per Square Mile.” The article was featured in the September edition of LiDAR Magazine and offers a peek at how we are providing clients like you this great […]

Atlantic Honored with MAPPS Award for Weakley County 911 Project

For the second year in a row, Atlantic has been honored with a MAPPS Geospatial Services Excellence Award for its project entitled, “Helping Weakley County, Tennessee’s Tactical GIS Team Maximize their LiDAR ROI.”

During the fall of 2013, Weakley County 911 Emergency Management contracted with Atlantic to perform classification and extraction of building footprints from the new USDA-NRCS LiDAR point data. The primary challenge associated with this critical project was to create 3D data for roughly 25,000 buildings over a 5,500 square mile area within a short amount of time and on a severely constrained budget. Toward meeting this challenge, Atlantic created a customized algorithmic LiDAR classification and extraction scheme that served to greatly reduce the manual effort typically associated with similar efforts. Brian Mayfield, President and Chief Operating Officer, who accepted the award on behalf of Atlantic, said, “This project showcases how private enterprise can deliver cost effective solutions to complex geospatial challenges.”

“The building footprints from this innovative process, have the detail, sharpness and appearance of photogrammetrically-derived features,” said Kimberley Denney, Associate Vice President. “Working together with the Weakley County 911 Director and GIS […]

Atlantic Upgrades Ortho Production Software to SimActive

Atlantic, a Huntsville-based company specializing in remote sensing, surveying and consulting services, has recently upgraded their ortho production software to SimActive.

SimActive’s Correlator3D™ software is a patented end-to-end photogrammetry solution for the generation of high-quality geospatial data from satellite and aerial imagery, including UAVs. Correlator3D™ performs aerial triangulation (AT) and produces dense digital surface models (DSM), digital terrain models (DTM), orthomosaics and vectorized 3D features. Powered by GPU technology and multi-core CPUs, Correlator3D™ ensures matchless processing power to support rapid production of large datasets.

SimActive creates automated processes with intuitive manual editing tools so Atlantic can create custom solutions and meet the individual needs of clients. While ortho-production has been highly automated for years, this software uses innovative algorithms that significantly reduce processing time, manual editing and results in a better overall product for Atlantic’s clients.

“At Atlantic, we place a high value on investing in the right solutions,” said Brian Mayfield, President and COO.  “After reviewing many test results and considering the capability of the software, we believe SimActive will offer our clients a quality product at the best price.”
