Geospatial Data Act Setting the Stage for Geospatial Coordination

The Geospatial Data Act (GDA) of 2017, ceremoniously re-introduced in both the Senate and House on GIS Day, is legislation worthy of the support of the entire geospatial community.   Since the concept of a national geospatial data infrastructure was introduced in 1993, there have been several attempts to improve geospatial coordination and codify many well-established processes.

Unfortunately, previous initiatives often fell short of the intended objectives, appearing to benefit one geospatial sector over another. The proposed legislation does a better job of managing geospatial assets while aligning the interests of the federal government with the need for partnerships with state, local and tribal governments.  As a provider of geospatial and consulting solutions for both governmental and private sector clients across a variety of markets, Atlantic is publicly supporting the Geospatial Data Act of 2017 and is hopeful that the collaborative approach to geospatial coordination will maximize data sharing and benefit all users and clients within the geospatial industry.

Mr. Cy Smith, the State of Oregon Geospatial Information Officer, shared his stance on the GDA with Atlantic’s team:

“This important legislation will give Congressional oversight of federal geospatial […]

Atlantic supports KAFM (Kansas Association for Floodplain Management)

Atlantics’ Jochen Floesser and Kyle Manderson will exhibit at the 2017 Kansas Association for Floodplain Management, Inc. (KAFM) Conference in Lawrence, KS on Sept. 6-7.  Atlantic was contracted by the State of Kansas on behalf of the Kansas Department of Agriculture and Kansas Data Access for professional services related to the development of LiDAR data in November of 2014.  Additional partners included the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, the U.S. Geological Survey, the Kansas GIS Policy Board, the Kansas Department of Transportation and the Kansas Water Office.  To date, we have acquired and developed nearly 30,000 mi² of USGS QL2 LiDAR data within Kansas and plan to add more to that later this year. The LiDAR data is used for conservation planning, design, research, floodplain mapping, wetlands identification, dam safety assessments, hydrologic modeling, and subsidence monitoring.  At Atlantic, we are continually focused on being better and improving our techniques to ensure our clients are receiving the highest ROI possible. We want to make certain we are serving the State of Kansas and its constituents by helping create solutions that achieve their specific geospatial goals.

Nebraska GIS/LIS Association Conference

Are you attending the Nebraska GIS/LIS Association Conference? Not only do we hope to see you there, our very own Tim Blak and Chris Chalmers will be presenting.
Tim will explain applications for the billions of lidar points collected! Want to learn more about LiDAR applications and what can you do with the data? A partnership of entities has strategically been collection lidar throughout the state of Nebraska. Billions of lidar points have been collected thus far yet that is all they are, just billions of three-dimensional points typically classified as ground and non-ground. In essence, they are one of the building blocks for creating data models to aid in analysis and the decision-making processes within a GIS environment. This presentation will look at how to use lidar data for hydrologic modeling including hydro-enforcement. It will also highlight additional applications for the forestry sector.
And Chris will discuss “Yes, We Can Provide High-Quality LiDAR for Less than $100 per Square Mile.” The article was featured in the September edition of LiDAR Magazine and offers a peek at how we are providing clients like you this great […]

Atlantic’s Thoughts on the ILMF (International Lidar Mapping Forum) Conference

By: Brian Mayfield, CP, GISP, SP, GIS, President & Chief Operating Officer

Earlier this year, Sean Higgins (SPAR 3D Editor) published his interview with RIEGL’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Dr. Andrews Ulrich, which focused on the future of aerial Lidar. The interview was conducted during the development of SPAR3D’s “The Future of Aerial LiDAR” report, which is free to download. The interview touched on a few very important topics that will be reviewed at this year’s ILMF conference – most notably, will technologies like Geiger and SPL (Single Photon Lidar) replace conventional technologies.

Like Dr. Ulrich points out, neither Geiger and SPL are new technologies. They have been utilized heavily in parts of the world where vegetation is void and flying at night is ideal due to the threat of enemy combatants. There is no question that the current manufacturers of this technology have advanced it further than anyone to date. But, can this technology meet the requirements of mature Lidar-based programs like FEMA’s RiskMAP, USGS 3DEP and NOAA’s Digital Coast? Of the two technologies, I think […]
