The Bathurst Inlet, Nunavut Mapping Project was the first of its kind to develop large-scale imagery and elevation data for this area located north of the Arctic Circle. The project’s extreme remoteness required a new solution to traditional mapping methods, as well as many logistical obstacles. Atlantic’s innovative project design has earned an award in the Airborne and Satellite Data Acquisition Category of the seventh annual MAPPS Geospatial Products and Services Excellence Awards Competition.
“The Bathurst Inlet, Nunavut Corridor Mapping Project by Atlantic was a very unique project. Located near the Arctic Circle, Atlantic was faced with many challenges involving logistics, project planning and project execution. The project involved image capture and elevation data over a strip of area 1,500 meters wide by 85 kilometers long and was completed on time and on budget,” said Robert “Bob” Burtch PS, CP, Professor Emeritus, Ferris State University, Big Rapids, Michigan, chairman of the judges’ panel.

A panel of independent judges evaluated projects submitted by MAPPS members for the awards program. Joining Mr. Burtch on the panel was Neil Sandler, publisher of Professional Surveyor Magazine, Frederick, Maryland; John Hetzler, editor for POB Magazine, Troy, Michigan; Leonard Gilroy, AICP, director of government reform at Reason Foundation, Los Angeles, CA; and Donn Dears, publisher of Power for USA, a social media organization publishing research and information on energy issues, Geneva, Illinois.
