Redstone Arsenal found itself in a familiar scenario for government agencies — it had more needs than finances. Rather than waiting for additional funding, they chose to be innovative with money they did have and invest in a non-traditional type of geospatial data that could be used to help them identify and prioritize their public works projects. This new data would become a tool for the Arsenal that would yield far more return than anticipated, thus resulting in the ability to do even more with less.

Atlantic’s Tim Blak Providing Consulting Services to the Government of Dominica

The Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica (GoCD) is taking a very pro-active approach in developing a plan to increase the island’s overall resiliency to climate change by leveraging a program funded by the World Bank called the Disaster Vulnerability Reduction Project (DVRP). The DVRP has far reaching affects in not only studying sea-level rise, but also in understanding the impacts from past and future natural disasters (hurricanes, tropical storms, flooding, landslides, etc.) for mitigation and engineering purposes. On August 27, 2015, Tropical Storm Erika unleashed 19 inches of rain in a short time on Dominica, resulting in extreme devastation to portions of the island. There were a number of casualties as villages and homes were destroyed by significant flooding and landslides. Furthermore, Dominica reportedly endured over $228 million USD worth of damage to roads and critical bridges, nearly half the country’s GDP.

“Fighting Crime with GIS and LiDAR” featured in xyHt

Atlantic is dedicated to helping our clients achieve their geospatial goals… or in this case, needs. “Fighting Crime with GIS and LiDAR,” an article published in the December 2014 issue of xyHt, details a partnership that quite literally saved lives. Weakley County, Tennessee’s 911 department was asked to assist in creating GIS-based intelligence packages to be used as a critical tool in a raid designed to apprehend over 40 suspects. With a limited budget, and using only their existing LiDAR dataset, Atlantic customized a solution that was by necessity, low on manual effort and high in accuracy. The resultant building footprints have the detail, sharpness, and appearance of photogrammetrically derived feature class that was manually drawn.

“Cost Effective Electric Transmission Corridor Mapping With LiDAR and Fixed-Wing Aircraft”

The bedrock of Atlantic’s success, both present and future, has been and will continue to be our commitment to R&D.  This commitment, along with our steadfast determination to develop innovative ways to deploy our technical knowhow, requires that we constantly be listening to our clients to better understand their ever changing challenges.  When we discovered the perception that accurate electric transmission corridor mapping could only be achieved using rotary aircraft, we teamed up with Leica to prove the capabilities using a fixed-wing platform.The article by Linda Duffy, “Cost Effective Electric Transmission Corridor Mapping with LiDAR and Fixed-Wing Aircraft,” published in LiDAR News, explains the challenge, approach, and results compared to rotary platforms.

Atlantic Supports The Army Corps of Engineers With Complex Survey Task Order

The Herbert Hoover Dike serves an important role for the entire South Florida region, aiding in flood control, water conservation, and preventing saltwater intrusion into the freshwater lakes. Without the dike, the entire eco-system would be affected and the region would suffer major devastation with even the smallest storm.

The need for a dike was recognized over 100 years ago, but the original structures of sand and muck failed. While ingenious for its time, the weak structure was completely ruined only 15 years later by a hurricane that took thousands of lives. It was later re-built in the 1930’s but still did not meet standards to truly address flood prevention. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that the new dike system you see today was constructed and given the name, the Herbert Hoover Dike.

The 143-mile earthen dam surrounds Lake Okeechobee and prevents flooding throughout the South Florida area, including the eco-important Everglades. “Preserve and Protect Bandelier National Monument” – Article featured in LiDAR News

In the article, Justin Henderson, Project Manager at Atlantic, details the historical significance of Bandelier National Monument and the capabilities of LiDAR to serve our National Parks Services. Justin’s love for our National Parks made him the perfect project manager for our team. In recent years, Bandelier has been devastated by fire and floods – changing the landscape, canopy and the entire ecosystem. The National Park Service partnered with Atlantic in an effort to preserve and protect our national treasure. Together, they decided to combat the devastation that Bandelier was experiencing by using the latest airborne laser scanning technology available. Much like the rich history, natural and cultural wonders- one has to go beyond what the naked eye could see to appreciate what Bandelier truly has within it; and that Atlantic-National Park Service collaboration aimed to do just that.

Atlantic Develops LiDAR for Bandelier National Monument

Los Alamos, New Mexico is perhaps best known for the infamous ‘Manhattan Project’, which developed the first atomic bombs during World War II. These days, the town is in the midst of a Project of a very different nature. Recently, Atlantic partnered with The National Park Service in Los Alamos on a Project with an impact of lasting historical, geological, and anthropological significance.

Within The National Park Service’s Bandelier National Monument lies the Frijoles Canyon, which formed out of a volcanic eruption some 1.14 million years ago. Now a major watershed, Frijoles holds a deeper meaning to the people of the region than one might be able to see with the naked eye.

As Park Rangers and local historians will tell, there has been evidence of human existence in the Canyon for over 10,000 years. Permanent settlements from ancient cultures still stand within the Canyon dating back to the year 1150. To the Ancestral Pueblo Culture, the land and its unique geology provided the perfect site to construct cliff dwellings and establish communities for hundreds of generations.
